Love That Came To Save

so why am i putting this song up this week? Because this coming Sunday at my church, San Gabriel Union Church www.sgucandcs.org, will be Communion Sunday, during communion we have the opportunity to approach the Lord’s Table and take the bread and the cup in remembrance of what was done by Christ death and resurrection. This song “Love That Came To Save” reflects on that price that was paid. The price? Jesus death on the cross, and the Victory through his resurrection conquering the grave and giving us a hope and grace that we do not deserve. The Chorus of this song is so powerful. I hope and pray that this song will cause us to reflect on that price and cause us to give praise and adoration!

There is a Fountain

Hey Everybody! This is a video response to a request that was made.

This Hymn was written by William Cowper (Pronounced Cooper). There surprisingly is not a whole lot of information to be found online about the history of this particular hymn, what there is a ton of history is in the man who wrote the Hymn. From researching it turns out that this man suffered from sever depression as well as other numerous physical and mental struggles. He wrote this hymn in the midst of his anguish.

So why is this interesting? It is interesting because we see a man living out what the word tells us to do in our times of struggle. To find our comfort and joy in the Word and In God, not of material or worldly things. He found comfort in Zechariah 13:1 “On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.”  The Holy spirit inspired him and he wrote this Hymn. I pray that this real life example will affect us in our day-to-day lives.

Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

Welcome!

Since this Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent i decided to, for the season of Advent, put songs that are from the 5 days of advent, 4 Sundays and one on Christmas eve.

The first Sunday of Advent is: The Prophets Candle Nov 28

Here is what it says ” This candle reminds us of the great promise of God, first made in Genesis 3:15.  God declared that one day He would send the seed of the woman, a divine deliverer through whom sinners could be rescued from bondage to sin and brought back into fellowship with God. The prophets anticipated the first coming and charged the people of God to prepare their hearts for the coming King.  On this Sunday we rejoice in the faithfulness of God to keep His promises and pledge ourselves to be shining examples of His redemption as we anticipate His second coming like. [Readings: Isaiah 7:14; 9:1-7; 61:1-3]“

And one of the songs we will be singing as a congregation this Sunday is Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus. This song was written in 1744 by Charles Wesley and was part of an 18 poem collection called, Hymns for the Nativity of Our Lord. The Tune behind the lyrics is “Hyfrydol” written by a 20 year old Welshman, Richard Prichard in 1830. the song title means “Good Cheer”

I pray you have an blessed holiday season and that you find these songs a blessing throughout your day.

Heaven

Welcome back!!!

I had been so hesitant to do this song because it is such and amazing song and i love the words and the way that it is arranged. The only thing is that the original key is quite high for congregational use so here is my arrangement of Heaven, It is written by Tyler Miller of the band Campaign and he is one of the recreation leaders up at Hume Lake and this is one of his best songs that he has written. Enjoy!

Be Thou My Vision

Sooooo Since my post last week one of my friends commented and told me i should put up some of the history behind the songs. soooooooo here we go!

This weeks song is Be Thou My Vision, It was written in 6th Century Ireland by a poet named Dallan Forgaill. It is said that he wrote and studied so much that they believe it lead him to blindness. He wrote the hymn as a prayer and used it widely in monastic traditions. It was written in Old Irish and it wasn’t untill 1905 that Mary Byrne translated it into English and later in 1912 Elanor Hull put it to verses, where we get the version we sing today.

The tune behine the words has a very cool story as well. The tune is called Slane from 8th century Ireland. Its name is taken from a historical event called Slane Hill. King Logaire had decreed that no one was allowed to build a fire until he had lit his to announce the start of the pagan spring festival.  St. Patrick defied the royal order and lit candles on the Eve of the festival. The King was so impressed by Patrick’s defiance that he pardoned him and allowed him to continue his missionary work in Ireland. St. Patrick would go on to convert 100,000 people and establish 2,000 churches. It was even further mentioned that St. Patrick had been kidnapped by pirates and forced to be a slave in Ireland! Wow pretty intense! Enjoy!
